About Canine Parvovirus

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal DNA virus that primarily affects dogs, with puppies, unvaccinated dogs, and immunocompromised individuals at the highest risk. Belonging to the Parvoviridae family, it has evolved into variants like CPV-2a, CPV-2b, and CPV-2c. The virus is extremely resistant in the environment, surviving for months to years in feces, soil, or on contaminated surfaces. It spreads through direct contact with infected feces or indirect contact with contaminated environments, targeting rapidly dividing cells—most notably the intestinal lining and, in newborn puppies, heart muscle cells.

Clinical Signs

Gastrointestinal Form: Frequent vomiting (often with mucus or blood), foul-smelling bloody diarrhea (ketchup-like), lethargy, loss of appetite, dehydration (sunken eyes, dry nose), abnormal body temperature (initial fever followed by hypothermia), and rapid weight loss.
Cardiac Form (rare, in newborn puppies): Difficulty breathing, pale gums, cold limbs, extreme weakness, and sudden death due to acute heart failure in severe cases.
