About Canine Cryptosporidium
Canine Cryptosporidium refers to intestinal infections caused by Cryptosporidium parvum or Cryptosporidium canis, microscopic protozoan parasites. These parasites are highly contagious and spread through ingestion of oocysts (infective stages) shed in the feces of infected dogs or other animals. Oocysts survive well in moist environments, contaminating water, food, or surfaces, and are resistant to many common disinfectants. The parasite invades the lining of the small intestine, damaging cells and impairing nutrient absorption. Puppies, immunocompromised dogs, and those in crowded settings (e.g., shelters, kennels) are at higher risk of severe infection.
Clinical Signs
Signs are primarily gastrointestinal, varying with age and immune status:
- Common Symptoms: Watery diarrhea (often profuse and persistent), abdominal cramping, loss of appetite, and lethargy.
- In Severe Cases: Dehydration (dry gums, sunken eyes), weight loss (due to malabsorption), and in puppies or immunocompromised dogs, prolonged diarrhea that may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Vomiting is less common but can occur in some cases.
