About Canine Rotavirus
Canine Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Rotaviridae family, a common cause of gastrointestinal disease in puppies, though adult dogs can also be infected. It primarily targets the lining of the small intestine, damaging the absorptive cells (enterocytes) and disrupting nutrient and fluid absorption. Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route, via ingestion of contaminated feces, food, water, or objects (e.g., toys, bedding) in environments with poor sanitation. Puppies under 12 weeks of age are most susceptible due to immature immune systems, and outbreaks are common in kennels, shelters, or breeding facilities.
Clinical Signs
Signs are typically mild to moderate, with severity higher in young or immunocompromised puppies:
- Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Profuse, watery diarrhea (often yellowish or grayish) that may last 3–7 days.
- Associated Signs: Vomiting (less common than diarrhea), lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal discomfort.
- Severe Cases: Dehydration (dry gums, sunken eyes, reduced skin elasticity) due to fluid loss from diarrhea, especially in puppies with no access to adequate water or electrolytes. Rarely, secondary bacterial infections may complicate symptoms.
