About Canine Giardia
Canine Giardia refers to intestinal infections caused by Giardia duodenalis (formerly Giardia lamblia), a microscopic protozoan parasite. This parasite is a common cause of gastrointestinal disease in dogs worldwide, particularly in environments with poor sanitation or high animal density (e.g., kennels, shelters). The infective stage, called cysts, is shed in the feces of infected dogs and spreads via ingestion of contaminated water, food, or objects (e.g., toys, bowls) with cyst-containing feces. Once ingested, cysts release trophozoites that attach to the lining of the small intestine, interfering with nutrient absorption and causing digestive issues.
Clinical Signs
Signs vary in severity, with some dogs asymptomatic carriers:
- Common Symptoms: Chronic or intermittent diarrhea (often soft, foul-smelling, and greasy), abdominal discomfort, bloating, and increased frequency of defecation.
- In Severe Cases: Weight loss (due to malabsorption), lethargy, and dehydration, especially in puppies or immunocompromised dogs.
