About Canine Coronavirus
Canine Coronavirus (CCV) is a highly contagious RNA virus belonging to the Coronaviridae family, primarily causing gastrointestinal disease in dogs. It targets the lining of the small intestine, disrupting nutrient absorption and leading to digestive issues. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected feces or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces (e.g., food bowls, bedding), especially in environments with high dog density like kennels or shelters. Puppies, immunocompromised dogs, and those with poor nutrition are more susceptible to severe infection. While most cases are mild and self-limiting, concurrent infections with other pathogens (e.g., parvovirus) can worsen symptoms.
Clinical Signs
Signs are mainly gastrointestinal and vary in severity:
- Common Symptoms: Watery diarrhea (often yellowish or orange, with a foul odor), mild vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy.
- In Severe Cases: Dehydration (dry gums, sunken eyes), abdominal discomfort, and weight loss, particularly in puppies or dogs with weakened immunity. Unlike parvovirus, bloody diarrhea is less common, and fever is typically absent or mild.
