About Canine Brucella
Canine Brucella refers to infections caused by Brucella canis, a Gram-negative bacterium that primarily affects dogs, with zoonotic potential (transmissible to humans). This bacterium targets the reproductive system, causing infertility and reproductive disorders in both male and female dogs. Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with infected reproductive fluids (e.g., semen, vaginal discharge, placenta, or aborted fetuses), as well as via ingestion, inhalation, or contact with broken skin. It can also spread vertically from mother to puppies during pregnancy or nursing. The bacterium survives well in the environment, making kennels, breeding facilities, and areas with infected dogs high-risk zones.
Clinical Signs
Signs are often linked to reproductive dysfunction, with some systemic symptoms:
- Female Dogs: Abortion (typically in late pregnancy), infertility, vaginal discharge (may be pus-like), and inflammation of the uterus (pyometra).
- Male Dogs: Testicular inflammation (orchitis), scrotal swelling, infertility, and inflammation of the prostate or epididymis.
- Systemic Signs (less common): Lethargy, mild fever, joint pain, or swelling of lymph nodes in some cases.
