About Canine Rabies
Canine rabies is a fatal viral disease caused by the rabies virus, a member of the Rhabdoviridae family. It primarily affects the central nervous system of dogs and other mammals, including humans. The virus is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, as it is present in saliva. Once transmitted, the virus travels from the site of the bite to the brain via peripheral nerves, leading to progressive neurological dysfunction. Rabies is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans, making it a significant public health concern worldwide. Vaccination is highly effective in preventing infection, but once clinical signs appear, the disease is almost always fatal.
Clinical Signs
Signs progress through stages, with variability in presentation:
- Prodromal Stage: Behavioral changes (e.g., restlessness, anxiety, or uncharacteristic shyness/aggression), fever, and sensitivity to light or sound.
- Furious Stage: Aggression, hyperactivity, disorientation, excessive salivation (foaming at the mouth), and a tendency to bite or attack objects/other animals.
- Paralytic Stage: Progressive paralysis (starting with the throat and jaw, leading to difficulty swallowing), lethargy, weakness, and eventual coma or death due to respiratory failure.
