About Rabies Virus

Rabies virus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Rhabdoviridae family, genus Lyssavirus. It is a zoonotic pathogen (transmissible from animals to humans) that causes fatal encephalomyelitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord) in mammals, including dogs, bats, raccoons, and humans. Transmission primarily occurs through the bite of an infected animal, as the virus is present in saliva; rare cases result from contact with infected bodily fluids entering open wounds or mucous membranes. Once transmitted, the virus travels along peripheral nerves to the central nervous system, replicating in the brain and causing irreversible neurological damage. Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once clinical signs appear, but vaccination is highly effective in prevention.

Clinical Signs

Rabies in dogs progresses through three distinct stages, with symptoms worsening as the virus invades the nervous system. Once clinical signs appear, the disease is almost always fatal.

Prodromal Stage (1–4 days):
  • Behavioral changes: Anxiety, restlessness, shyness, or uncharacteristic aggression.
  • Local symptoms: Itching or discomfort at the bite site, with frequent licking/chewing.
  • General signs: Low fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, and increased sensitivity to light, sound, or touch.
Furious/Acute Neurological Stage (1–3 days):
  • Aggression: Unprovoked attacks on people, animals, or objects.
  • Dysphagia and hypersalivation: Difficulty swallowing (leading to "hydrophobia"—fear of water due to painful spasms) and excessive drooling/foaming at the mouth.
  • Disorientation: Aimless wandering, confusion, and exaggerated reactions to stimuli.

Paralytic Stage (2–4 days):

  • Progressive paralysis: Starts with hind limbs, spreading to the entire body; inability to stand or walk.
  • Respiratory failure: Paralysis of throat and chest muscles leads to difficulty breathing, coma, and eventual death.
