About Leishmania canis
Leishmania canis refers to canine leishmaniasis, a chronic and potentially fatal parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum (often referred to in the context of canine infections as "Leishmania canis"). Transmitted primarily by female sandflies (e.g., Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia species), the parasite enters a dog’s body through sandfly bites, infecting immune cells called macrophages. It spreads to major organs like the spleen, liver, bone marrow, kidneys, and skin, where it replicates and causes progressive tissue damage. The disease is endemic in Mediterranean regions, South America, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, with unprotected dogs in high-risk areas at greatest risk.
Clinical Signs
Signs are often systemic and vary with infection severity, ranging from mild to life-threatening:
- General Symptoms: Lethargy, persistent weight loss, loss of appetite, and fever (intermittent or low-grade).
- Dry, scaly dermatitis (especially on the ears, nose, and paws), hair loss, ulcers, or crusty lesions that may be itchy.
- Enlarged spleen or liver, kidney dysfunction (leading to increased thirst, urination, or protein in urine), anemia (pale gums), and swollen lymph nodes. In advanced cases, joint pain, muscle wasting, or neurological signs (e.g., seizures) may occur.
