About Canine Lyme
Canine Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochete bacterium transmitted primarily by black-legged ticks (e.g., Ixodes scapularis in North America and Ixodes ricinus in Europe). It is a prevalent tick-borne disease affecting dogs worldwide, particularly in wooded, grassy, or humid regions where ticks thrive. When an infected tick feeds on a dog for 24–48 hours, the bacterium is transmitted into the bloodstream. The bacteria then spread through the body, targeting joints, tissues, and sometimes organs, leading to inflammation and disease if left untreated.
Clinical Signs
Signs vary, with some dogs showing no symptoms initially, but common and severe manifestations include:
Common Symptoms: Lameness (often shifting between legs due to joint inflammation), fever, lethargy, and swollen lymph nodes.
Severe Cases: Chronic joint pain or arthritis, reluctance to move, loss of appetite, and in rare instances, kidney damage (characterized by increased thirst, urination, or protein in urine) which can be life-threatening.
