About Feline Giardia
Feline Giardia refers to intestinal infections in cats caused by the microscopic protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis (syn. Giardia lamblia or Giardia intestinalis). This parasite is widespread in feline populations, particularly in multi-cat environments like shelters, catteries, or households with poor sanitation. Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route: cats ingest infective cysts shed in the feces of infected animals, which contaminate food, water, litter boxes, or objects (e.g., toys). Once ingested, cysts release trophozoites that attach to the lining of the small intestine, disrupting nutrient absorption and causing digestive dysfunction. Kittens, immunocompromised cats, and those with stress or overcrowding are at higher risk of severe infection.
Clinical Signs
Signs vary in severity, with some cats remaining asymptomatic carriers:
- Common Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Chronic or intermittent diarrhea (often soft, foul-smelling, and greasy), increased frequency of defecation, and abdominal bloating or discomfort.
- In Severe Cases: Weight loss (due to malabsorption of nutrients), lethargy, and dehydration—particularly in kittens or cats with prolonged infection. Vomiting is less common but may occur in some individuals.
