About Feline Coronavirus
Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is a common virus among cats. Most FCoV infections are mild and cause only transient gastrointestinal symptoms. The FCoV antigen (FCoV Ag) test is used to detect the presence of the virus in a cat's body. Cats become infected by ingesting contaminated feces, usually in environments with poor sanitation or high cat density, like shelters or catteries. In a small percentage of cases, the virus can mutate into a more virulent form that causes Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).
Clinical Signs
- Non - mutated FCoV: Mild diarrhea, soft stools, and sometimes vomiting. These symptoms are often self - limiting and resolve on their own.
- Mutated FCoV (leading to FIP): Refer to the FIP section for details, as it can present as either wet (effusive) or dry (non - effusive) forms with more severe symptoms.
