About Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that weakens a cat's immune system over time, making it more vulnerable to various infections and diseases. The FIV antibody (FIV Ab) test is used to determine if a cat has been exposed to the virus. FIV is mainly transmitted through deep bite wounds, usually during fights between cats. Once infected, the virus targets immune cells called T - lymphocytes, gradually depleting the cat's immune defenses.
Clinical Signs
- Early Stages: Often asymptomatic or may show mild signs like gingivitis (inflamed gums) and stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth).
- Later Stages: Weight loss, chronic or recurrent infections such as upper respiratory infections, eye infections, skin problems (e.g., abscesses, dermatitis), and neurological issues like ataxia (lack of coordination) or behavioral changes.
