About Feline Leukemia Virus
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that can cause a variety of diseases in cats, including cancer, immune - deficiency, and anemia. The FeLV antigen (FeLV Ag) test is used to detect the presence of the virus in a cat's body. FeLV is transmitted through close contact between cats, such as through sharing food and water bowls, grooming, and bite wounds. It can also be passed from an infected mother cat to her kittens during pregnancy, birth, or nursing. The virus attacks the cat's immune system and bone marrow, disrupting normal cell function.
Clinical Signs
- General Signs: Lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, and recurrent fever.
- Immune - related: Increased susceptibility to secondary infections like upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.
- Blood - related: Anemia, which can cause pale gums, weakness, and rapid breathing.
- Cancer - related: In some cases, FeLV can lead to the development of lymphoma (a type of cancer), presenting as swollen lymph nodes, vomiting, diarrhea, or neurological problems.
