About Feline Calicivirus
Feline Calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious virus that commonly causes upper respiratory tract infections in cats. The FCV antigen (FCV Ag) test helps in diagnosing active FCV infections. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected cats, such as through respiratory secretions, or indirect contact with contaminated objects like food bowls, toys, or bedding. FCV can also cause oral ulcers and lameness in some cases.
Clinical Signs
- Respiratory Signs: Sneezing, nasal discharge (ranging from clear to thick and yellowish), conjunctivitis (red, inflamed eyes), and coughing.
- Oral Signs: Oral ulcers, especially on the tongue, lips, and gums, which can cause pain and difficulty eating.
- Lameness (in some strains): Some strains of FCV can cause joint inflammation, leading to lameness, typically affecting multiple joints.
